Why was there a war in Vietnam?

Leading up to Communism

About 3 million US men and women were sent to Vietnam for a cause that isn't clear, and it is esstimated that 2.5 million people were killed on both sides

After WWII -1955, France fought to keep their territories, they lost, and the French were finally defeated by general Vo Nguyen Giap.  It took place at Dien Bien Phu on the May 8,1954.

After the french were defeated the country of Vietnam was seperated, North and South.  The leader of the North was Ho Chi Minh, a communist.  The leader of the South, was anti-communism; Ngo Dinh Diem.

1955 and 1960, the North Vietnamese and the Vietcong (the southern communist), tried to take over South Vietnam. November 1963 Diem was overthrown and executed. One year later North Vietnam began a to conquer the whole country aided by China and Russia.

Thats when the United States were involved becasue they feared that the communist will take over the entire region.  The United States, under the policy of containment, had to interfere to stop the spread of communism.

How Did Vietnam Become Communist?

In Oct. 1945 the French tried to take over Vietnam by bombing Haiphong. The Vietnamese fought back by sending the Viet Minh so obviously, the French lost. When the battle was over and the French were gone the Vietnamese had an election and Bao Dai won, sadly, the Soviets and most of East Europe refused to recognize them.  China on the other hand had recently become Communist and Mao Zedong was happy to help.
